About Georgetown

Thirty miles north of downtown Austin, Georgetown is the seat of Williamson County. It was founded in 1848 and named for George Washington Glasscock, who gave the land for the town. The city sits on the Balcones Escarpment, and the North and Middle forks of the San Gabriel River run through it. Southwestern University, founded in 1840 and known as the oldest university in Texas, has long been part of the town's identity.

Interstate 35 is the main link to Austin, with State Highway 130 running to the east and State Highway 29 crossing town east to west. County government and Southwestern University are steady local employers, and Sun City Texas, a large retirement community, sits on the west side. The 1911 Williamson County Courthouse anchors a downtown square full of restored Victorian buildings. Blue Hole Park on the San Gabriel River, Lake Georgetown and Inner Space Cavern are favorite places to spend a day.
