About Abilene
About 150 miles west of Fort Worth, Abilene is the seat of Taylor County, with part of the city reaching into Jones County. Cattlemen picked the spot in 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railway came through and skipped the old county seat at Buffalo Gap. They named it after Abilene, Kansas, the end of the Chisholm Trail.
Interstate 20 loops along the north side of town, and US 83, US 84 and US 277 tie Abilene to the rest of West Texas. Loop 322 runs along the east side. Dyess Air Force Base is by far the largest employer, with Hendrick Health and Abilene ISD next in line. The city is also a college town with three universities: Abilene Christian, Hardin-Simmons and McMurry. Downtown has Frontier Texas, a museum on the area's frontier past, and the restored Paramount Theatre. The Abilene Zoo, Kirby Lake and Lake Fort Phantom Hill are popular for time outdoors.
