About Wichita Falls

Up in North Texas, about 15 miles south of the Oklahoma line and roughly 115 miles northwest of Fort Worth, Wichita Falls is the seat of Wichita County. The Wichita River runs through town. The city was platted in 1876 and named for a small waterfall on the river. A flood in 1886 washed that falls away, so the city built a 54 foot artificial one in Lucy Park in 1987.

Interstate 44 ends here, and US 287, US 277, US 281 and US 82 all meet in town, so getting to Dallas or Oklahoma City is simple. Sheppard Air Force Base is by far the biggest employer, followed by the school district, United Regional Health Care System and Midwestern State University. Locals spend time at Lucy Park, Lake Wichita Park and on the Circle Trail, which loops more than 24 miles around the city. Downtown has the Newby-McMahon Building, known as the world's littlest skyscraper.
