About Atascocita

Atascocita is not a city. It is an unincorporated community in Harris County, counted by the Census Bureau as a census-designated place since 2000. It lies about 6 miles east of Humble and 18 miles northeast of downtown Houston, with its east side on Lake Houston. The name comes from the Atascocito outpost and road the Spanish built in 1756. Building here started in the 1970s, and by the 1990s it was one of the fastest growing parts of Greater Houston.

Farm to Market Road 1960 is the main east to west road, and West Lake Houston Parkway runs north and south through the area, connecting to Kingwood and down toward Beltway 8. Since there is no city government, Harris County handles policing, the Atascocita Fire Department covers fire and EMS, and schools are part of Humble ISD. Lake Houston is the big draw for boating and fishing. Atascocita Park, the Lindsay Lyons Park and Sports Complex, and the Tour 18 golf course round out local spots.
