About San Angelo
San Angelo grew up around Fort Concho, an Army post set up in 1867 where the North and South Concho rivers meet. Buffalo soldiers served at the fort, and much of it still stands. Today the city is the seat of Tom Green County and the main town of the Concho Valley in West Texas, about 225 miles west of Austin.
Goodfellow Air Force Base is the largest employer, and Angelo State University and Shannon Medical Center are close behind. US 87, US 67 and US 277 are the main routes in and out, linking the city to the rest of West Texas. Water shapes a lot of free time here. Lake Nasworthy, Twin Buttes Reservoir and O.C. Fisher Reservoir are all close by, and San Angelo State Park has more than 50 miles of trails. Downtown, the Concho River Walk follows the water past the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.
